Two dragons approach the same enormous red door. A red dragon occupies one half of the split screen; a blue dragon occupies the other. Split Fiction makes the partnership visible before anyone explains it.
That is one way to spend an evening together. Another is making a route through an alien cave. A third is staring into a dark corridor, hoping the equipment tells you something useful before the corridor does.
These three games all accommodate a pair, but they answer different requests. Split Fiction is built for exactly two people. Deep Rock Galactic and Phasmophobia let two people play within a larger supported group size. Decide whether this is your shared adventure or a regular gathering that might grow.
Split Fiction: make this a game for the two of you
The dragon scene in our Split Fiction field notes comes from an official gameplay reveal. It shows separate viewpoints approaching a common destination, with the creatures becoming part of how the characters travel. Other showcase scenes change the surroundings and abilities again.
That variety is the attraction I would put first. Choose it when both of you like learning a new trick, seeing what the other person can do, and moving into another strange situation. A pair looking mainly to practise one familiar weapon or refine a long-term build has a different priority.

The practical starting point is unusually helpful. EA’s Friend’s Pass guidance lets two people with the pass try the opening demo together. For the full adventure, one owner can invite a partner through the pass. That gives you a way to check whether you both enjoy the format before committing to the whole journey.
EA also confirms local co-op and cross-play across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Check its controller, account and online subscription requirements for your setup. If you want to sit beside each other at one screen, this is the clearly documented option in this shortlist.
If you like the dedicated-pair format but prefer a household transformed into a strange adventure, consider It Takes Two. Our Split Fiction vs It Takes Two comparison separates the story tone, current platform support and ways to try each opening together.
Deep Rock Galactic: make a useful mess together
Deep Rock Galactic suits a different conversation: “How do we get through this place?” Its official Steam listing specifies one to four players, so a pair fits, with room for more friends later.
The useful detail in our cave recording is the Engineer’s yellow platforms. They remain attached to the rock, turning a troublesome surface into a route. Later, equipment has to be repaired and defended before the journey home can finish. Shooting shares the evening with making the place more manageable.
For two people, that is the appeal to discuss: do you both enjoy solving practical problems between fights? Someone who likes exploring and making a route may find more to anticipate here than in an evening built entirely around aiming. Someone who regards every interruption to combat as a delay may feel differently.
The analysed recording is a solo Engineer mission with Bosco, from August 2022. It demonstrates the tools and mission tasks, not two human players dividing them perfectly. It also cannot tell us which class combination your pair will prefer.
Before buying, exchange exact platform and store names. The official compatibility page places Xbox and Microsoft Store PC together, with Steam separate. Two PC copies are not automatically a compatible pair.
Phasmophobia: agree that paying attention is the activity
Kinetic Games supports solo play and groups of up to four, including cross-platform investigation. Two people can choose it without finding another two to fill the evening.
The more important requirement is appetite. In our Sunny Meadows example, equipment and repeated views gradually make a corridor familiar. That familiarity gives the later encounter its force. The waiting and observation are part of the attraction.
Choose it if discussing what you noticed sounds enjoyable to both of you. If one person wants a frightening mystery and the other wants constant targets, the headcount works but the evening may not. Our source is an extreme solo Apocalypse III challenge; it is not a forecast of an ordinary two-person contract’s length or difficulty.
Pick the activity before the purchase
My starting recommendation is Split Fiction for a dedicated pair, Deep Rock Galactic for practical cave work with room to expand, or Phasmophobia for shared curiosity and dread. Send your partner the relevant scene, then ask which part they would actually want to do.
Use the two-player game filter for more candidates. It includes games that accommodate two, so keep the distinction between a dedicated duo and two places in a larger group in mind.
