Thirty-two seconds remain on the truck defence. The survivor is back on their feet, the road is burning, and the objective still needs protecting. It is an easy scene to send to three friends with “this tonight?” attached.

The next message matters: “I’m on PS5. Can I join you?”

A game being sold on everyone’s system does not answer that question. Cross-play concerns joining the same session; platform availability only tells you where a version exists. Here are three contrasting starting points for a mixed PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S group, plus one PC-store distinction that can spoil a plan before the first mission.

A loud shared objective: Toxic Commando

Focus Entertainment confirms up to four-player co-op with cross-play across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its release information includes Steam and Epic on PC.

The reason to choose it is what those friends would be doing together. In our mission analysis, vehicle work gives the journey character before a different, large truck becomes the fixed object of a defence. An incapacitation brings a rescue into a countdown that keeps running.

This is the scene to send when everyone wants a clear common aim and a fight that can get messy around it. Fire and effects compete for the view. Watch the recovery as well as the crowd before deciding that the spectacle suits the whole group.

The shared objective is clear even when the fight becomes crowded. Frame: No Commentary Casas; recording and licence details in the field notes.

A quieter common question: Phasmophobia

Kinetic’s game page describes up to four players investigating together across platforms. Its console and cross-play announcement explicitly connects PC with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and describes cross-play as optional.

That opens a very different evening for the same mixed-platform group. The job is gathering paranormal evidence. Friends need to want the observation and discussion that lead to a frightening moment, not just the moment itself.

Our Sunny Meadows scene shows a camera, equipment and a corner gradually becoming familiar before an encounter. It is an extreme solo challenge, so it cannot predict a normal group contract’s duration or difficulty. Its value here is showing why paying attention can be the activity.

If friends cannot see one another’s lobby, check the game’s cross-play choice and current official help before assuming that shared platform support has disappeared. This guide confirms published support, not current server health or your account settings.

Powerful help, across platforms: HELLDIVERS 2

Arrowhead’s support page confirms cross-play between PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The official game page gives the four-person squad limit. Our reviewed group check covers Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The invitation is easy to picture in the official co-op showcase we examine: a friend calls in useful equipment, then another friendly-fire mishap puts a teammate’s name on the death screen. Choose it if those accidents sound like stories your group would forgive, alongside the busy firefights.

There is a separate purchase catch. Arrowhead explicitly says cross-play does not provide cross-save, cross-progression or cross-buy. Joining a friend on a different platform is supported; moving your existing progress or ownership there is a different question. Check the exact store’s account, region and online-play requirements before buying another copy. These HELLDIVERS 2 references were checked October 16, 2026.

A pair or a larger group needs another starting point

For exactly two people, Split Fiction includes Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. EA’s Friend’s Pass guidance confirms cross-play and explains how an owner can invite one partner into the full adventure. Its changing abilities and split view make it a different proposition from filling two places in a larger shooter.

It Takes Two is another exactly-two-player option. EA’s current setup guide includes PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series and native Switch 2 in cross-play; original Switch follows separate rules. Use updated game versions. Older same-platform-family advice does not describe the current setup.

For up to six, Abiotic Factor offers survival and crafting across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Playstack confirms full cross-play. The important preference question is whether everyone enjoys gathering supplies and making a shared place, as well as handling threats.

Two PC copies can still belong to different groups

Deep Rock Galactic supplies the useful caution. Its official cross-play page states that the Xbox and Microsoft Store PC versions can play together, while Steam is separate from that group.

“We both have it on PC” is therefore not enough detail. A Steam copy and a Microsoft Store copy are different answers for this plan. The cited page also does not establish a wider PlayStation compatibility matrix, so we do not extend its claim to one.

That does not weaken the appeal of making a route through an alien cave. It changes the practical decision that has to happen before the group buys. Share the store link you intend to use, not only the game’s name.

Ask each friend for their exact console or PC store, the game edition they have, and whether they have enabled cross-play where it is optional. Include everyone in the headcount. The shooter and survival examples concern online co-op. Split Fiction also offers local co-op; check its linked setup guidance for controllers and accounts.

Cross-play also does not, by itself, promise that a save, paid class or expansion carries between platforms. If someone is changing systems, check those features separately. In particular, interest in Darktide’s Arbites showcase should include a check of its paid class contents rather than an assumption about the base edition.

For five or six people, the four-player picks above will not fit everyone in one squad. Go to the six-player guide and verify the exact versions of the candidate you choose.

Now choose the kind of night

For a four-person group with these supported systems, compare Toxic Commando and Phasmophobia. Their practical overlap makes the difference in activity clearer: defending a visible objective in a crowd, or investigating a place whose threats are harder to read.

Use Plan a co-op night to check your headcount and exact console or PC-store combination against our reviewed compatibility records. It explains a supported match, a known mismatch or a setup that still needs checking, with the sources beside it. The game finder remains a broader way to browse platform availability. If everyone uses compatible PC versions already, our four-player shortlist offers more directions.
