Rochelle is firing while another survivor heals. There is no dramatic briefing, just a progress bar and someone keeping the fight occupied. For a few seconds, two different actions are helping the same group move on.

That Left 4 Dead 2 moment is a useful starting point for four friends choosing a game. Having four places in a lobby solves the headcount. The more interesting question is what you want to need each other for.

The four choices below are drawn from our credited scene analyses and official game descriptions. They offer different activities, not a ranking from invented playtime. For friends split across PC and consoles, start with our cross-platform guide. Compatibility can settle the choice before mood does.

For quick rescues: Left 4 Dead 2

In the Dark Carnival sequence, a rooftop gives the survivor a good view until a Jockey takes control. The team is close, but getting free still takes time. Later, helping Ellis becomes the urgent job.

This is the invitation for friends who like noticing an emergency and responding immediately. You might be aiming at your own target when another survivor’s situation takes priority. The healing pause is a quieter version of the same idea: somebody needs a few useful seconds.

The PC campaign described by Valve follows four survivors. Our recording does not establish how many were controlled by people. It demonstrates the support mechanics without telling us how your particular group will behave.

Ask your friends: does being pulled out of control until someone helps sound exciting or irritating? Send the full rooftop rescue, including the delay, before agreeing.

For making yourselves useful: Deep Rock Galactic

The Engineer builds an odd yellow staircase near the drop pod. When the exit finally opens, those platforms are still there: useful work left in the cave.

That is the part to show a friend who enjoys doing something practical between fights. The official premise includes one-to-four-player co-op, different classes and destructible caves. Our solo Engineer run with Bosco shows platforms, repairs and a difficult departure, rather than four humans assigning jobs.

The Engineer looks down into the cavern with a large, glowing object held in view.
The salvage run includes carrying objects as well as fighting. Frame: Gameplay Guild; recording and licence details in the field notes.

Ask your friends: do exploration, repairs and making a route sound like part of the evening? Also agree on the store version: Steam is separate from the Xbox/Microsoft Store cross-play group.

For comparing observations: Phasmophobia

A camera, a familiar wall and an uncomfortable wait are enough to give our Sunny Meadows example its shape. When the photograph happens, the small retreat behind the wall feels significant because the space has been established beforehand.

Kinetic Games describes a four-player investigation built around gathering paranormal evidence. That gives friends a reason to exchange observations. The appeal depends on whether paying attention during a quiet stretch sounds enjoyable.

Our example is a demanding solo challenge, not a model for your first contract or its duration. Ask your friends: would discussing a small clue keep everyone interested, or would someone spend the wait asking when the shooting starts?

For deliberate concentration: GTFO

The scan is progressing. The room beyond it is still difficult to read. In the expedition we analysed, the promise of finishing a task never quite removes the uncertainty around it.

GTFO’s official description puts a four-person team, coordination and limited resources at the centre. This is the direction to investigate when everyone actively wants to prepare and pay attention. Our older Rundown 6 A1 footage illustrates that pressure; it does not measure today’s difficulty.

Ask your friends: is concentration the reason you are meeting, or were you hoping to catch up while a game runs in the background? Four available players do not necessarily mean four people wanting the same demand on their attention.

Make the first choice together

Pick the shared job first: rescue, build, investigate or prepare. Then filter the collection for four players and compare the two games that match the answers. The filter includes games with more than four places too; capacity alone is not a recommendation about how they feel with four.

If the discussion points toward a noisy shared defence instead, add Toxic Commando to the pair. If the group might grow to five or six, read our six-player guide before anyone commits.
